For those of you who have home tanned hides for awhile. Does the end product differ when tanning a freshly cleaned green hide as compared to a hide that has been on a forming board and left hung for a month or so (I am not talking six months or more). I am also talking about softer hides like weasels, marten, foxes not grizzly old beaver.

Fresh skinned hides will produce better leather but it works fine either way especially when doing thinner skinned animals like fox. You will want to brush it with a relaxer and soak in same before putting in salt solution to rehidrate the hide before tanning when doing dried pelts.

Better to dry the hides after a thourough fleshing.Drying will weep out more grease in the hide.
When you rehydrate and scrape before tanning you will remove more grease giving you a better finished product.
There is nothing that hinders rehydration and or tanning than grease left in the leather.
When a dried pelt is rehydrated it should be just as loose as when it was first taken off the animal.

I beg to differ Wahbush Skin flesh salt 2 x 24 hrs ea, pickle , Thin ,DEGREASE will get all the grease out, pickle , tan .
I don't like to have to rehydrate a hide .

More chance for slip to occur
