MadTrapper,
Did you break the hide when it was almost dry? Stretch it and work it over a tight wire or piece of rebar. Are you using a fleshing knife to thin it?

thin it down with a wire wheel evenly and aggressively is key. heavy manual breaking required. intensive but end product garment usable.

careful using the wire wheel. it works but it's hard to stay consistent with the thickness without going to deep. I find sanding it by hand gives me better control but it's time consuming.

just my experience....

Folks that use a wire wheel, are you thinning when the hide is wet out of the pickle? Or when it is dry?

As I was breaking the hides I used a wooden post but kinda didnt trust myself fearing I might rip or tare the hides I took the extra time thinning it by hand with a vary sharp knife being a 20yr trapper was pretty easy to do but vary new to tanning fur at home
