Post subject:  Dry or green pelt for alum tanning?

I am doing some tanning with a mix of alum, salt and washing soda. Is there any difference between starting with a fleshed green pelt or a fleshed and dry boarded pelt?

Starting from a green state will produce a better finished tan, in my opinion. If you start from a dried stage you have to rehydrate it first.

Great thanks. What is a good time in tanning solution? I've heard various answers ranging from 2 days to 2 weeks.
