Aluminum sulfate will react with salt in water to produce sulfuric acid, which is your pickle,or tan depending on the ph.The ph of a pickle is between 1 and 2 and the ph of a tanning solution is between 4 and 4.5.You can make your pickle into a tanning solution by adding small amounts of washing soda to adjust the ph.
before adjusting the pickle to a tan, remove the skin and neutralize it with water and baking soda.If you don't do this your tanning solution will only bond on the surface of the skin and wont completely tan the leather. This is known as case hardening.

I use Citric acid. Get a 50 lb bag for 75$. Always looking for a cheaper way if you guys got suggestions.
LazyJ I can get my PH down to 1.5 or 2 easy enough. It works well.
