i tried tanning some muskrats with the same solution i use for coons deer and coyotes and such but find that even after rinsing the pelt and breaking the pelt i dont seem to get that smooth suade feel i get with the other species. Instead my leather is still a bit stiff. Just curious if anyone has another meathod or tricks for tanning muskrats? thx.

To tan a rat is simple . Any solution that you used should be ok as long as all te meat was removed.
. The key is the breaking. In the evening while you watch tv ball the piece like a piece of paper roll it and unfold again . continue with it s suede soft.
The more any pelts of worked the softer it will be.

all the meat and most of the membrane were removed and i used the alum/salt way to tan the pelts, then used a 2x4 that i rounded a bit at one end to rub the pelt across back and forth but never managed to get it to the suede look and feel like i did with other animals done the same way.

Clamp the 2x4 in a vise and pull the rat over the 2x4. Break it this way then use the ball up method. I did i mink that way couple years back and was soft.
