I just received 3 more otters from the tannery (more mitts and hats coming up). Must say I am, again, disappointed with the fact that my pelts each have a few holes, which were not there when first I sent them. Has this happened to you? Is it normal?
In the past, I've also sent bear and fox pelts and they, too, came back with holes. I'm starting to wonder.

Trapperman, I know you tanned your own fisher. Are you satisfied with the quality of the leather, compared to that of a "professional" tanner? Would you do it again?

I'm very happy with how it turned out but when i mounted the fisher i put the fur on wet right out of the solution and it seems to of turned out good, i also tanned a coyote pelt for a hat i made and it turned out good also, well i think it did. my only problem is working the leather to make it softer.

One of our local taxidermist quit sending to the tannery because of holes and rips on the returned hides, he does them himself now.

I had a bear hide tanned and it came back with holes that I know weren't there before I sent it. I've always wondered if it could be a different bear then the one I sent.

Thanks, LOM.
I'm definetly looking for a new tanner for my future projects. However, I'd like to encourage a company from my own province. We have too many buisnesses closing down as it is.
By the way, should be receiving my 2 hats and mitts in a couple days. I, for one, definetly encourage wearing fur, which is why I'm offering the hats and mitts to family members, as gifts.

Bugsy, a local guy I have been using for a couple of years is
Tannerie Silbo owned by Sylvain Beauvais in Lac Carre, Quebec ( 60 miles north of Montreal) 819-688-3086 , info@tanneriesilbo.com
Very small place but does very good quality work.

Is that right? :D
You mentionned the word I am looking for... "quality".
I'll be looking into it.

Thank you very much, tom44.

Hi Scotty,
MY work? You're over-estimating me, buddy
I have someone in Quebec that makes the hats and mitts (No, NOT the same guy at the tannery who is putting holes in my pelts).

Here are pictures from my last project. The hats and mitts I will be receiving this week will be identical to these, except one of the hats will have brown leather, instead of black:
