Has anyone got any experience with the Safety Acid Tanning solution? I see that Halfords carry it and it seems rather inexpensive and supposedly quite safe to handle. I just did a mink with the Tanner's solution from Halfords and was quite disappointed even though I followed the directions religiously. It left the hide a bit sticky and never really softened very well.

In my opinion you will not get a quality tan with the "tan in a bottle" methods. I do 10 to 50 game heads etc a year and you need the heavy chemical, period! To get a proper tan you need to first put your hide in a pickel. This changes the ph of the hide. They make a safety acid for this or you can simply use a food grade citric acid. You then neutralize the hide back to a more basic level with baking soda. You then actually ''tan" the hide in another solution, some are an oil, others are powder based.I have tried most of them and lutan F is the method i prefer. The final step is to apply a quality tanning oil, this just softens and restores the oils back into the hide. I would then wash, dry and mount if it were a game head. If if it were a pelt i would tumble to "break" the hide and make it soft. if you dont have a tumbler you can pull and stretch the pelt as it dries over numerous days. Every article that is tanned needs to be "breaked" after tanning that is what makes it soft. Iam certainly no expert this is just what i do for my taxidermist buisness, and has worked for me.
