 Post subject: Tanning beaver problem

Having a lil problem with my beaver hides ive tanned lots of otters and stuff in the past with beautiful resaults but 1st time doing beaver and ran Into a raw hide state stiffness the nice white colour inside hair still on used the hide formula (orange bottle) smells gone salt cured and washed thinned by hand but vary stiff once completely dried should I run the process again? Or did I miss something? Any suggestions would be great

MadTrapper,
Did you break the hide when it was almost dry? Stretch it and work it over a tight wire or piece of rebar. Are you using a fleshing knife to thin it?

thin it down with a wire wheel evenly and aggressively is key. heavy manual breaking required. intensive but end product garment usable.

careful using the wire wheel. it works but it's hard to stay consistent with the thickness without going to deep. I find sanding it by hand gives me better control but it's time consuming.

Folks that use a wire wheel, are you thinning when the hide is wet out of the pickle? Or when it is dry?

Ive been at it with the wire wheel and broke the hides all the way threw from semi dry to fully dry as the process went it kinda just got harder been getting rougher with it but not sure if any much more has changed still kinda stiff

As ive been working it the bellys are getting much better I guess I'll try a few more hours working it in

As I was breaking the hides I used a wooden post but kinda didnt trust myself fearing I might rip or tare the hides I took the extra time thinning it by hand with a vary sharp knife being a 20yr trapper was pretty easy to do but vary new to tanning fur at home
