Have iridium 9555 and love it no wait time to connect up like others.
Would not go hunting or trapping without only wish that the ringer was not so loud.
When my contract runs out April 6 will probably get iridium extreme with the safety features and the element proof assembly.

i went with globalstar $20/mo no minutes ... but they have coverage around 45mins/hr so you may have a wait here and there to make a call. Since I only use it for emergencies, a few mins wait to make a call isn't a huge deal since well rescue would be quite the time anyways.

Some times a speedy call is needed before you pass out from a injury or the iridium extreme has a SOS button!

I went through dealer in Prince Albert , Saskatchewan. Has A variety of contracts!
Also got my 9555 wet one time and did not work after till I shook the Sh!t out of it .
It could have been other reasons .I sprayer the battery area with a spray and did not happen again.
should get cheaper than what you have for prices.

Ferg
I have a global and would have never bought it if I would have known how bad their service is. I have had it for 2 years and I would say that 90% of the time it does not work and when it does sometimes it is of 5 minutes.
I called and asked why and they told me they had some satelites go down but they would be up again next month. Well that is 24 months ago and they are still no where as good as the Iridium as I trap on 5 lines up north and some of the guys I trap with have the Iridium and they make fun of my Global.
When my contract runs out I will be buying an Iridium!
OMNR used to use Global and they have changed all their Sat phones out.
Hope that helps!
Darcy

dar: the only way we've been able to use it is by using the autodial function, it is virtually useless for incoming calls

We have a Globstar at work and its not very good. I use it a bit but anyone that uses it a lot really complains about it.

Dealer for Caribou Trapping Knives & Cold Steel Knives.
I just bought one off the net and hooked it up today.
I bought a Globalstar 1600 $50.00 activation fee and $40.00 per month unlimited phone calls in Canada.

I'll let you know it works.

God Bless

Irridium is far better technology utilizing 66 satalites. Globalstar is intermittent depending upon your location and utilizes only 24 satalites.

For safety devices the SPOT is using Globalstar and the new Delorme uses the Irridium satalites. The newer SPOT has one way communication while the Delorme through your cell phone has two way communication.

For Sat Phones the Irridium is definitely the superior of the two systems.

Andy like trapp said for globalstar it depends on location, here i can talk uninterrupted for 20-30 minutes and sometimes have up to 1 1/2 hours of talk time (if needed) before loosing sat signal, when i do lose service i rarely have to wait more than 5 minutes to talk again, globalstar is much more reliable (again depending on location) than it was a few years ago, also the global phone is much less expensive to buy and operate, I'm paying right now $20 a month + $5 satellite fee and tax unlimited minutes, this includes voice mail if your wife call you when your phone is off for something important like saying "i love you"
With more talk time the Iridium is a better phone but it comes with a price, IMO it's not worth the extra $$$$ for fellows out in the bush unless your planning to spend hours on the phone each day.
I check the call duration around your area for today and from what i see it's quite good.
here's a link which you can check the call duration time in your area
