Can you sell a fur hide you tanned yourself at home? I think in Ontario you are allowed too, I am in BC.

Thanks.

Might depend if you have a taxidermy license. If so the BC taxi license was cheap 25 years ago.

Ontario trappers can sell raw or home tanned, with a valid trapping licence

you need a permit or a fur dealers licence to buy raw fur in Ontario a trapper can sell fur they tanned themselves now no permit. It is against the law to buy without a licence and it is against the law for a trapper to sell fur to someone that doesn't have a licence so both parties can be charged. A trappers licence only allows the trapper to trap and hunt not buy trade or receive fur from anyone else you want to be very carful when receiving fur could be big trouble. I was a fur buyer for many years as was my father before me if you buy you need a licence

Trapperpete, Can self tanned fur be sold in a finished product, for example, mittens or hats, by trappers in Ontario? to someone without a buyers license?

This is what it says in the regulations which are printed in the FUR MANAGERS magazine that we all should have
received reg. #9(A) to buy sell or deal in pelts of furbearing mammals, except under the authority of a licence
9(b) to sell trade or barter the pelts of furbearing mammal, or to be concerned therein, except to , or with, a person licenced therefor.
9(c)To possess pelts without the authority of a licence.

10 To tan, dress or treat furbearing mammals or their pelts except under the authority of a licence. A trapper may, without a fur dealer's licence, tan, pluck or treat a pelt harvested under his/her licence, and sell the pelt
This to me means that you can tan and make things that you took yourself and sell them because you may sell the pelt, but you can't do it for someone else without a licence to do so
eagerbeaver I hope this helps. One of the first things I read in the magazine is the regulations each year just as a reminder to my self and to see what are new regulations there are to follow

If you are selling tanned pelts, either those you tanned yourself or those you have had tanned at a tannery it is required that you issue an invoice to the buyer.
This will also help you if there are any questions about your harvest report,as you will have a paper trail of all fur that has gone thru your hands.

According to the local fur tech...rules are and have changed around this topic. If you get a straight answer...you'll be lucky. I had a coon tanned by a guy with license..then made into hat...it's a good thing!

All the more reason to keep a paper trail of your transactions.

once the hide is tanned for a garment then i'm pretty sure you can do what ever you want, otherwise they would have to regulate the sale of every hat, mitt and jacket sold

Its a regulation, when selling tanned pelts you are required to issue an invoice to the buyer and keep a copy.
