I have tried using the HIDE TANNING FORMULA in the flourescent orange bottle. Trying to tan a few early beaver hides. I am not having much luck, or I am expecting too much from a bottle product.I have folloed the directions to the LETTER 3x! Leather is mainly white..ISH, most of it. The darker areas I stretch out, they then turn white...ISH, lol the sides (belly area) are supple, but the rest is fairly STIFF. Is that to be expected? There is not really much you can do with it in the state it is in, unless I wet it AGAIN, and then s t r e t c h it out for drying. At that point I guess it is pretty much a wll hanging. Am i right? My next foray into tanning will be BRAINS. I look forward to ANYONES reply. Mark |

Mark: I did several last year, and hooped them with the same product and had no trouble. Two were not hooped and were quite supple...a nice tan colour. Two had been stretched and dried and turned out stiffer than the rest. Give Robert Conners a call, he is quite knowlegable about the process. John |

yeah brain tanning. This is an indian method. works good for air on and air off tanning. you buy a pig brain, put it in the blender and blend it until you have a think paste. Lots of good article over the web on that. Looking forward on trying it next season. |

Each animal's brain provides enough mixture to tan it's own skin. nature's balance. There's also bark tanning and veggie tanning but they are very tedious methods used way before the industrial era. |

Brain tan and smoking hides is still carried on here in Alberta, and Saskatchewan for sure, likely Manitoba also. Some very nice products come out of Saskabush. I beleive the reason it is not all that common is it is very labour intensive, Most of it was done by elderly ladies , but the method has been passed on to younger generations also. Halford Hide & Fur in Edmonton buy and sell, and they sell a lot higher than they buy! It is extremely expensive. |

I used the same stuff, bright orange bottle... had exactly the same results as you... soft on the sides. Like a board everywheres else.... going to try adding neatsfoot oil IF I can find it in town here... Thunder Bay Ont. |

Kevin Keep in mind you want double boiled Neatsfoot oil . Single will not dry will stay tacky for ever. |

i tanner 2 deer pelts this fall using 1 lb of alum in 1 gallon of warm water, still till diluted. In another bucket add 2.5 lb of salt with warm water also and stir till diluted. Add poth mixtures in a garbage can and mix together then add your pelt. (make sure they are really well fleshed or this method wont work). Let soak for 6-8 days, checking afterways with a knife to make sure its tanned right through. (cut a thick piece on the outer edge). When tanned stretch hide using neats foot oil and a rag to smear the pelt while pelt is still damp. Once pelt is almost dry another application of oil then pull the hide over the back of a sturdy chair or something similar till smooth (might have to add oil again possibly if too much of a effort is needed. |
