Hi all. New to the forum and new to tanning. I decided to try my hand at tanning some rabbit pelts that I had brought home with me, not for sell but to just to try it and possibly make myself a Coyote hunting decoy with 1 or 2 of the tanned furs. I am trying the method described at http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1983-01-01/How-To-Tan-Rabbit-Hides.aspx using the acid/salt recipe. Here is my issue that I hope someone can help with. I am not sure if I am possibly taking too much of the "underskin" off but as I am removing what I THINK is the fatty tissue, the skin is ripping and is almost paper thin (thin enough to almost see through when held up). It is a silvery/grey colour under the membrane that I have been trying to remove. Am I trying to remove too much or is this the proper method? Should I only be trying to remove any obvious flesh and fat? Maybe I am just moving too fast as I am somewhat impatient. Thanks in advance. Richard |

Check out the "Taxidermy.net" site. there is a tanning section and a search box, you may find answers there. |

I am not sure what rabbits you are tanning but I know that our snowshoe hare have very thin skin not much you can do with it. The ones that I have tanned have always torn easily. |

id just rub lard into the skin when its still wet. as its drying you can work it over a chair to break the fibers in the skin. this is a method natives would do when they were short on brains for tanning but instead of lard they used redered down fat which is basicly lard. |
